Headway and Future Track Teams Visit the Barcelona Supercomputing Center and Conclude with a Lunch at the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona

Last Thursday,  November 28th, the teams of Headway and Future Track had the privilege of visiting the renowned Barcelona Supercomputing Center–National Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), a world leader in computational science and technology.

The day ended with a delightful lunch at the iconic Real Club de Polo de Barcelona, fostering collaboration in a prestigious setting.

During the visit, we were introduced to the MareNostrum 5, one of the most advanced supercomputers globally, ranked 8th in the TOP500 list. This state-of-the-art machine features a hybrid architecture, combining a general-purpose partition and an AI-accelerated partition, delivering 200 petaflops (200,000 trillion operations per second) and 248 petabytes of storage. It plays a pivotal role in high-impact research areas such as high-resolution climate simulations, breakthroughs in biomedicine, and advancements in artificial intelligence.

the MareNostrum 5 is equivalent to more than 465,000 times the most powerful computer you have at home.

We also had the opportunity to learn about the experimental quantum computer being developed at the BSC. This groundbreaking project aims to transform fields like cryptography, optimization, and molecular modeling by performing computations unattainable for traditional supercomputers.

Our deepest gratitude goes to the BSC team for their hospitality and for sharing insights into how these cutting-edge technologies are shaping the future. The day concluded with a wonderful meal at the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona, offering us a chance to reflect on how such innovations can impact our organizations and society at large.
