[ART.] THE JOB SEARCH FOR MANAGERIAL PROFILES: THE TARGET METHOD

In Destacados, Headhunting, Headway News, New tendencies

Looking for a managerial job can be like shooting arrows at a target. Every time you send out your CV or attend an interview, it’s as if you are aiming at a specific target. Sometimes, you may hit the bull’s eye and get that desired position, but other times, the arrow may not go as far as you had hoped.

Job searching using the target company strategy involves focusing on your goals and on the companies that really interest you and where you can add value, in terms of experience, industry knowledge, etc… The target has a centre that represents the main objective, but remember that this target has more dimensions and circles that you can aim at, thus widening the options and opportunities.

To look for a job, you should make a pre-selection of companies based on the different levels of the target: Yellow, the centre of the target, are the 100% target companies (competition) as there is a perfect fit in terms of sector, technical knowledge, organisational structure, size and turnover. Red are those companies that, despite being of a different sector or type, are similar to your past experiences and you can bring added value to them. In the Blue level, you are distancing yourself from the target, but your profile can fit in with the specific moment of the company and its future project. As for the Black level, it refers to other companies that, despite being totally different from your previous experiences, you are excited to meet and work in them because of their positioning, social/professional field, innovation, etc… that fits your vital moment, but you must be aware that the chances of success are more remote.

Here are some steps you can follow:

1. Define your goal: Identify the type of management position you want and the industries you are interested in. This will help you focus your efforts on the companies that align with your goals.

2. Research companies: Make a list of companies that you consider ideal for you to work for. Research their culture, values, and growth opportunities. This will allow you to personalise your approach and demonstrate that you really care about the company and bring high professional value.

3. Network: Connect with people who work at those companies or in the industry. Use platforms such as LinkedIn to build relationships and get information about job opportunities.

4. Prepare your CV and cover letter: Make sure your CV and cover letter provide relevant information and can add value to the company and position you are applying for. Highlight your achievements and skills as these should align with what they are looking for.

5. Prepare for interviews: Learn about the company and be prepared to answer specific questions about how you can contribute to their success. Practice your answers and make sure you have questions ready to ask them.

6. Follow the process: After you submit your application or attend an interview, follow up. This demonstrates your interest and can help keep you in the minds of recruiters.

7. Evaluate and adjust: If you don’t get immediate results, evaluate your strategy. Is there anything you can improve? Adjust your approach as necessary and keep trying.

It is important to keep practising and adjusting your aim, learning from each experience. Each attempt brings you closer to your goal, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t get it right the first time. With perseverance and strategy, you’re sure to hit the bull’s eye!
