This, in turn, generates numerous benefits for companies.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/es.weforum.org\/agenda\/2024\/01\/como-afrontar-la-creciente-crisis-de-salud-mental-de-los-trabajadores\/\">World Economic Forum<\/a>, mental health problems decrease productivity levels, increase absenteeism and labor turnover, and consequently lead to instability within companies, which also results in reputational consequences. Thus, today, a company&#8217;s success goes beyond sales numbers, attracting new clients or consumers, or financial growth. Having healthy work teams is a fundamental pillar for a company&#8217;s success.<\/p>\n<p>While mental health issues cannot be classified as a recent phenomenon, it is true that they have been growing in recent years due to multiple factors related to new dynamics of the modern world. These include lifestyle changes due to urbanization and technology, increased social pressure, economic instability, and more recent events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>The figures are increasingly alarming. The <a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/eurobarometer\/surveys\/detail\/3032?etrans=es\">2023 Eurobarometer<\/a> survey, completed by 26,501 people from various countries in the European Union, shows that 46% of respondents have faced emotional problems, anxiety, or depression. Of this population, 54% have not received help. Additionally, most respondents indicated that recent global events have exacerbated mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>In the workplace, and considering that on May 1, International Workers&#8217; Day was commemorated, the <a href=\"https:\/\/consaludmental.org\/sala-prensa\/planes-reincorporacion-baja-laboral-salud-mental\/\">Spanish Mental Health Confederation<\/a> revealed that in 2023, approximately 600,000 sick leaves were recorded due to mental health and behavioral problems, 15% more than in 2022. This is why we call on companies, from all sectors and sizes, to implement measures that contribute to the prevention of mental health disorders or issues.<\/p>\n<p>Given the prominence of this issue, there have been many recommendations for fostering well-being in work environments that promote mental health. However, I bring up some recommendations made by entities such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/es\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/mental-health-at-work\">World Health Organization<\/a>, among others, that are worth keeping in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Balancing workloads and work pace:<\/strong> Ensure an adequate number of employees relative to the amount of work, so that there is no overload in terms of responsibilities. This also facilitates each team member performing their tasks rigorously and thoroughly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Providing flexible schedules:<\/strong> Ensure schedules that allow for balancing personal and work life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promotion of learning:<\/strong> Motivate employees through learning opportunities. This not only allows them to learn new skills but also represents an opportunity to take on new roles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Encouraging participation and autonomy:<\/strong> Based on recognizing employees&#8217; capabilities, motivations, and interests, promote growth opportunities and ensure visibility for work teams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Establishing organizational cultures based on values:<\/strong> Through respect, empathy, tolerance, and inclusion, combat issues like inequality, exclusion, and discrimination, which significantly contribute to current mental health problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promoting cooperation:<\/strong> Teamwork offers essential support for task completion, which can enhance results. Through teamwork, social support can be promoted, while also strengthening social skills and reducing stress. Having a cohesive team can also foster a sense of belonging to the organization.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fostering dialogue and trust relationships:<\/strong> Open, two-way communication at all levels of the company is fundamental for early detection of concerns, dissatisfaction, or issues. Additionally, generating trust relationships allows employees to feel at ease and secure that their needs will be considered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ensuring healthy and harmonious work environments is undoubtedly a company&#8217;s responsibility and a fundamental right. However, the invitation is for companies to view this issue not as an obligation but as an investment that generates countless benefits, not only for employees but also for the company&#8217;s sustainability. According to various studies, such as those by the Business and Sustainable Development Commission, nowadays, clients, consumers, and investors show a greater preference for supporting companies that go beyond generating profits for their shareholders and simultaneously commit to social development, employee well-being, environmental care, sustainability, among other aspects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Paula Gutierrez, Consultant at Headway Executive Search\u00a0 Every company aims to generate wealth and contribute to development.
