Although this trend has been applauded for its ability to improve work-life balance, it is crucial to reflect on the potential negative impacts, especially for young people.

After the survey we carried out through LinkedIn, where more than 500 people participated and closed this month of January 2024, it reveals that 86% agree that young people should go to the office to work. Next, we will see some of the reasons why the employee’s presence is crucial both for personal and professional development, as well as beneficial for the company itself.

Going to the office to work provides a rich environment for developing social skills and building interpersonal relationships. As Suzy Welch, a business expert at Insider, mentions, “remote work probably won’t take Generation Z very far,” as she believes that this way of working, away from the places where contacts move, is very detrimental to workers. of Generation Z whose professional career has just begun. Face-to-face interaction with colleagues and superiors not only strengthens the professional network, but also encourages social learning and collaborative problem solving. For young people who are still building their social skills, spending time in in-person work environments can be essential.

Constant teleworking can contribute to social isolation and a lack of clear boundaries between work and personal life. The absence of a specific physical space to work can lead to constant mental workload. Young people, who are often in crucial stages of personal and professional development, could benefit greatly from the structure and boundaries that an in-person work environment provides. Even Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, is very critical of teleworking and suggested that younger engineers, those who are “at the beginning of their careers,” perform better when they work with colleagues in person for at least three days a week. week. In general, there is talk that remote work can take away the visibility and learning capacity of young people.

Opportunities for informal learning and mentoring are essential for professional growth. Being physically present in the office allows young professionals to more easily access advice, guidance and development opportunities. Direct observation of effective work practices and interaction with experienced professionals can be difficult (and in many cases impossible) to replicate in a virtual environment. Listening and being listened to in routine is possibly where you learn the most without realizing it.

Every time you ask someone or hear something interesting at the office, remember that you wouldn’t have learned that at home. All of that is what you miss every day.

Creativity often flourishes in collaborative environments and diverse discussions. Constant interaction with colleagues can lead to new ideas and innovative approaches. Thought sharing and creative synergy may be limited in a teleworking environment, where communication is often more structured, limited and formal.

Being present in a physical workplace contributes to the construction of professional identity. Participation in company events, meetings and activities reinforces the sense of belonging and connection with the organizational culture. For young professionals, this connection can be essential to developing a strong professional identity.

Furthermore, teleworking increases the feeling of “fed up” or working all day, because time is not managed well, as mentioned in the Capital Humano article.

In conclusion, while teleworking offers a range of benefits, it is crucial to balance this flexibility with the importance of physical presence in the workplace. For young people, in particular, social development, mental health, mentoring opportunities, creativity and the construction of professional identity are fundamental aspects that could be affected if teleworking is exclusively chosen. Ultimately, finding the right balance between remote work and physical presence could be the key to optimal professional and personal development.

Written by Victor Carulla, Managing Partner and Andrea Garcia, Digital Communications Responsible in Headway Executive Search In today’s digital age, teleworking has experienced exponential growth, giving people the flexibility to do their work from “the comfort” of their homes.
